Nordqvist Photography presents work by Staffan R.B. Nordqvist, MD, PhD. I am a retired University Professor and practicing physician in the field of Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology.
Ever since my early years I have had a passion for the arts, particularly theater, film and images. After retirement I have had the opportunity to pursue my fascination with pictures. I decided to learn digital photography and digital manipulation of images in Photoshop. This was a major undertaking, since my computer knowledge was at best marginal. However, with help from people who knew and numerous workshops I have reached a stage where I feel fairly comfortable both with the camera in hand, and in front of the computer with the intricacies of Photoshop. It is a lifelong learning curve, each picture and each workshop teaches me something new.
As an artist I try to show impressions as seen through my eyes and develop a style of my own. My landscape and travel pictures often have been manipulated to emphasize contrasts and colors, frequently they simulate paintings and sometimes do best printed on canvas. Collages of portraits and nudes, and sometimes nature allow the imagination to flow, leaving the viewer with his or her own interpretations. Photoshop filters can help produce effects that sometimes are quite striking.
With the exception of pictures from Antarctica, all images have been captured digitally with the Fujii S1 and S2 Pro SLR cameras. They are downloaded to the computer at which time the real work begins. Many photographers look down on such manipulation as not showing reality. In a way they are right, but digital photography is a new and different art form, and fortunately there is room for it as well as conventional photography.
Life is a series of trials and errors. So is art. Few things are absolutely right or absolutely wrong. Freedom of expression is critical for self fulfillment and progress. I feel fortunate to have this opportunity for a second career which I will pursue to the best of my ability.
